How I Became The Paleo In Heels
Hey, I’m Zoë. A thirty something Executive Assistant working in the film industry, based in Soho, London. At 29 years of age I was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Rheumatoid Arthritis. Doctors told me they could help manage the pain but there is no cure and so prescribed me with various medications to suppress my immune system. I was given steroid injections to ease the swelling in my joints and when the pain became too much. I realised that unless I went into clinical remission (something I later found out didn’t happen too often), I would be a slave to these drugs for the rest of my life. My medication would disguise the symptoms of the disease, however I wanted something closer to a cure.
After years of suffering with chronic pain in my joints, mainly my hands & feet, I had decided it was time to look elsewhere for an alternative treatment. A friend of mine mentioned the benefits of his Paleo lifestyle. He introduced me to others that had made the change and had witnessed immediate improvement in a whole range of chronic conditions. I started to do my own research. It didn’t take long at all to find countless others in exactly the same situation as me. A whole community of sufferers choosing to adopt a Paleo lifestyle in search of a way to reduce the reliance on their medication and discover a way to escape the effects of the disease. The more I read, the more I started to understand the link between what we put into our bodies and the effect this has on our immune system and general well-being. It was time to start putting what I had learnt into practice. Surely if it had worked for others, it could work for me. Besides I had nothing to lose and everything to gain….
This is my personal journey from sickness back to health (and just a few of the things I have learnt and loved in-between)…..
